ABC Network Project Team Holds Meeting in Skopje, North Macedonia

The Co-Director of the Balkan Institute for Science and Innovation (BISI) at the University of Montenegro, Prof. Dr. Stevo Popović, attended a working meeting held on May 21 and 22, 2025, at Mother Teresa University in Skopje, as part of the international scientific research project ABC Network (Age-Friendly Balkans Network).

The ABC Network project, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Joost van Hoof from The Hague University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands), aims to examine, through scientific research, how older citizens perceive the age-friendliness of their environments. This analysis is being conducted across the countries of the region: Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, and North Macedonia.

The importance of this project has also been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), whose representative from the Regional Office for Europe, Mr. Yongjie Yon, delivered a presentation during the Skopje meeting.

The research within the project also covers the local level, analyzing individual municipalities and their policies toward the elderly, with the goal of providing concrete recommendations to policymakers at both national and local levels. Special focus is placed on creating conditions for healthy and active aging.

In addition to Prof. Dr. Joost van Hoof and Prof. Dr. Stevo Popović, the meeting was attended by numerous international experts involved in the project: Prof. Dr. Daniel Pavlovski, Dr. Jeroen Dikken, Dr. Hannah R. Marston, Willeke Van Staalduinen, Katja Rusinovic, Dr. Milica Solarević, Dr. David Bogataj, Gaby Weij, Fiona Todhri, and others.

This visit marks the continued active engagement of the Balkan Institute for Science and Innovation in regional and international initiatives that contribute to the development of evidence-based policies and the improvement of quality of life in the community.
