At the Competition for awarding grants for scientific research projects of the Ministry of Science of Montenegro, the project of the Historical Institute of UoM Virtual Museum of Cultural and Historical Heritage of the Skadar Lake Basin - VIRTUS was ranked first in the field of humanities.

The main idea behind the VIRTUS project is to create a comprehensive, easily accessible, accurate and reliable digital service for presentation, promotion and valorisation of the rich cultural-historical heritage of the Skadar Lake basin. Driven by the understanding that mentioned area epitomizes the crossroads of historical, social, cultural and many other influences having shaped the Montenegrin identity and being aware of inexistence of such platform, a multidisciplinary team gathered around the researchers from Historical institute of University of Montenegro will address this question through creation of thematic virtual museum – a digital repository of documents, manuscripts, books, graphic, audio and visual materiel, computer generated 3D models and the other descriptive and documentary data related to this domain.

The R&D work will consist of desk and field researches on historical sources from relevant archival institutions, libraries and otherwise preserved collections, photo and video documenting the current state of the art, digitalization and 3D modelling of important locations, monuments and artefacts, aimed for creation of database needed in order to design the online available repository. Furtherly, mentioned data will be used for creation of thematic cultural routes of the area, chosen according to their historical, geographic and cultural contexts:

  • The traces of antiquity
  • Times of dynasties – medieval period
  • Ottoman and Oriental-Islamic presence
  • Creation of independent Montenegrin state
  • Cavalcades of XX century
