Launch of the GREENROUTES Project

The University of Montenegro / Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor leads the project consortium titled “Establishing Green Maritime Corridors for Carbon-Neutral Cruise and Ferry Transport in the Adriatic-Ionian Region” (Green Corridors for Carbon-Neutral Cruise and Ferry Shipping in the ADRION Region – GREENROUTES). The GREENROUTES project targets the decarbonisation of maritime transport by developing a strategy to establish green maritime corridors between passenger ports in the Adriatic-Ionian region. These corridors will serve as a starting point for achieving the broader goal of a carbon-neutral and better-connected Adriatic-Ionian area.

The establishment of these corridors will be based on the use of alternative marine fuels for ship propulsion (carbon-free energy carriers such as ammonia, hydrogen and electricity; low-carbon fuels such as methanol, LNG and LPG; and carbon-neutral fuels such as biofuels), as well as on the development of appropriate port infrastructure for their storage.

The €1.35 million project will be co-financed by the European Commission under the 1st Call of the Interreg IPA ADRION 2021–2027 Transnational Cooperation Programme, Programme Priority 3 (Supporting a carbon-neutral and better-connected Adriatic-Ionian region), Specific Objective SO 3.1 (Strengthening carbon-neutral smart mobility in the Adriatic-Ionian region).

In addition to the Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor as project coordinator, the GREENROUTES consortium includes: the Environmental Protection Agency of Montenegro; the Port Network Authority of the Southern Adriatic Sea (Bari) and the Port Authority of the Strait of Messina (Messina), Italy; the Faculty of Maritime Studies, University of Split, and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, Croatia; the National Technical University of Athens / School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Greece; the General Maritime Directorate (Durrës), Albania; and the Environmental Protection Fund of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sarajevo), Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Associated partners are the Chamber of Economy of Montenegro, the Port of Split, the Port Authority Split and Split-Dalmatia County, as well as the Hellenic Ports Association.
